VirtualDJ Radio update: (the 2011 mix and more)

In case you didn’t know: I play every Friday from 15:00 to 17:00 (GMT+1) on VirtualDJ Radio channel 3. A great way to listen to some of the latest Drum and Bass releases (I always play my latest purchases and I buy new stuff at least once a week) and get some energy needed for the last hours of work before the weekend kicks in.

Since uploading every radio set is becoming less fun and more tedious every time I think I’m just gonna stop doing it. Also it’s not needed anymore because the folks at VirtualDJ Radio have build an awesome automatic system to listen back to every single set played on all three channels. The last two weeks were dedicated to a three hour mix of tracks released this year! I know, it’s a lot, I was surprised myself. And since two hours a week time two weeks minus a three hour set equals one hour left there must be more, right? Right! The final hour was hard to mix because of all the broken rhythms, but also very cool because of the same broken rhythms. I like tracks with complicated drums and basslines.

Do not expect more posts here the coming weeks, because I’m working hard on a totally new website with a cool backend to make life easier for me and a equally cool fontend because cool people need cool websites. And I need a playground for web-related stuff.

When I joined the student association Biton about ten years ago and immediately signed up to be a deejay (everything at Biton is done by volunteering menbers, and to become the man behind the music at party’s all I had to do is write my name down on a poster). At first I had to familiarize myself with a lot of music I did not know much about at that time, but I got hooked on deejaying pretty fast and grew out to be a pretty good all-round deejay, if I do say so myself. I had much fun, but a few years ago I grew tired of maintaining my knowledge of current pop music, most of which I didn’t like that much myself anyway.

I continued learning to beatmix for fun, and because the home-made deejaying software we used at Biton did not run on my Mac I started to look at alternative software on a whim at USB controllers. I do not own a mixer and turntables or cd players and and do not have much money to invest in a small hobby. To my surprise there are plenty affordable deejay controllers.

For a few months I’ve been toying with playing drum ‘n bass. When the organisation of Biton Open Air asked me to play at the afterparty and I decided to accept and put more work in this project to be able to play a drum ‘n bass set of the quality I’d expect from myself at such an event. So I started to put together a decent music collection and I decided to buy the Hercules DJ Controller Mk4 when it hits the marked, which I just did.

I just did a try-out set of about an hour at a regular evening at Biton which went pretty well. I forgot to record it so I used the automatically generated playlist to redo and record the set, which you can now not download and enjoy home because I accidently deleted the file and am too lazy to search in my backups, there are plenty newer sets to download here anyway!

Human vs Machine clustering in Music collections

For the semantic web course in my master program I’ve spend the last few weeks working on an exploratory project with two colleagues. The goal we’ve set for ourselves is to research if it is at all possible to cluster music based on automatically extracted musical features and compare those clusterings to clusterings based on the tags users annotated the songs with on Last.fm.

Even though time was very limited and many improvements can be made in almost every step the results we obtained are encouraging. The clustering based on the musical features did make (some) sense and the differences between human categorisation and feature based clustering are interesting to say the least. The most striking example to me is that there always was a cluster with (almost) all classical music and a song by Nirvana, which users put in the grunge genre.

It was fun to work on, and I hope there are possibilities to continue this project with more time to make more proper assessments. And as a personal bonus I finally got around to exploring the beautiful programming language Python. Of course I’ve only scratched the surface, but it was enough to make my programmers heart beat a bit faster.

KockFest 2010

Afgelopen weekeinde was het KockFest 2010. Eigenlijk gewoon het vrijgezellenfeest voor Jeroen, maar KockFest klinkt stoerder. Ik heb het idee dat we ons totaal niet aan de stereotypen van een vrijgezellenfeest (verkleden, gênante opdrachten, strippers en dergelijke) hebben gehouden, maar een aantal zoekopdrachten in Google naar “vrijgezellenfeest ” toont aan dat die ook helemaal niet zo hoog scoren in vergelijking met wat wij hebben gedaan. Ik heb bij de zoekwoorden plaatsnamen achterwege gelaten omdat die extreem veel hoger scoren. De conclusie van dit uitermate wetenschappelijke onderzoek verbaast me eigenlijk niet. Het is gewoon veel leuker om met z’n allen leuke dingen te doen, en we zijn uiteraard niet de eersten zijn die dat hebben bedacht.

The fifth of May is liberation day in the Netherlands. I realy like the liberation festivals because there is always a realy unique atmosphere, a bit more relaxed and friendly than other festivals because everybody is celebrating their freedom. Perhaps this is only the case because I am celebrating my freedom and thus experience the festival different, but that doesn’t realy matter to me. I had a great time moshing around at de Heideroosjes concert, but when the band announched we were going to peform an old eighties tradition I realy had no chance to escape to the back (mostly because of all the people going to the front) and was literaly run over in the circle pit. Great fun for me, I just hope nobody got hurt whilst marching over my hard metal wheelchair :)

The presence of the twenty or so flies in my room is really demanding a proper fly-catcher. That’s why there now hangs a sticky yellowish strip of paper from my ceiling which hasn’t caught a single fly. Admitted, it has only been three minutes. Too bad that my constant staring at it doesn’t seem to affect its efficiency.

On xkcd‘s blag I read a post about an article from about 1900 he found in which a prediction about the coming century is made. Apart from the fact that is a nice article to read I’d like to mention, just for the record, that I have done my part in fulfilling the prediction. What is the rest of the world waiting for?

Grafkankertyfushoeren, dat zijn het.

Het UVW heeft een oostindische postkamerwerknemer in huis, want aanvraagbrieven komen prima aan maar een bezwaarbrief van 30 maart en van 3 mei is niets van te vinden. Niets aan te doen meneer, u kunt de brief het beste nog een keer versturen en dan aangetekend. Tsja, da’s waar. Maar toch.

Het UVW doet niet zo hard werken intern. De aanvraag voor een WaJong van 1 mei 2006 resulteert in een gesprek met de arts op 15 januari 2007. Ik wacht nogsteeds op een gesprek met de arbeidsdeskundige die de uiteindelijke beslissing gaat nemen. Ik probeer alle telefoontjes bij re houden zodat ik wel weet wat er allemaal speelt. Ik heb er wel wat gemist, maar voorlopig staat de score op 8 terugbelbeloftes waarvan er 2 zijn waargemaakt.

Housewarming

Vandaag zouden Koe(n) en ik een mooie drankplank maken voor onze gezamelijke collectie en natuurlijk het mens-erger-je-niet spel. Uiteindelijk heb ik een mooi opbergsysteem in de WC gemaakt en hebben we de UTP bekabeling netjes weggewerkt en het wireless accespoint tegen het raam in de opbergkamer gezet. Nu heb ik overal in mijn kamer en in de tuin goed bereik. Koe(n) met z’n superieure hardware had overal al goed bereik, maar mijn plastic speelgoedappel kan dat nog allemaal niet zo goed.

Ik heb sinds kort een laptop en zinds nog korter twee. De eerste is opzich geweldig maar de hardwareondersteuning onder Ubuntu was niet optimaal. Bovendien is 256mb RAM toch net te weinig voor een appache2-php-mysql server met een grafische shell. De nieuwe heeft meer pixels, meer ram en werkt wel als een zonnetje. De nieuwe Feisty Fawn maakt het plaatje compleet. Een lappie die wel kan suspenden, vette grafische effecten a la MacOS en ingebouwde wifi die met de nieuwe network manager wel goed werkt.

Maargoed, geen drankplank dus. Uiteindelijke ‘s avonds laat na het opruimen nog naar de housewarming van Ruben en Lauri geweest. Zij wonen in een bovenwoning aande amsterdamsestraatweg. Superleuk huisje, lekker sfeervol en dan nog de drukte en gezelligheid van de straatweg. Maar het is wel erg raar om de achterdeur van je eigen huis achter hun op slot te doen en ze gedag te zeggen. “Doei, was een leuk feestje!”.

Daar sta je dan alleen in je eigen achtertuin met het huis op slot.
